Amygdala systems in appetitive learning

Organisms routinely learn about stimuli that reliably predict food. This appetitive learning involves broad behavioral adaptation to present, past, and future events, not just the acquisition of simple conditioned reflexes. One laboratory model of associative learning, Pavlovian or classical conditioning, provides a convenient way of examining these aspects of learning, including changes in behavior, motivation, and cognition. In this presentation, I will review research in my laboratory that showed roles for various amygdala regions and extra-amygdalar circuitry in supporting different aspects of these changes in rats.
