This course will review some of the major historical works on the many ways in which the discourses and practices of states and nations are gendered. In keeping with Feminist perspective, we will concentrate on the effects of state power and national(ist) discourses on 1) the everyday lives of women, men, and societies. 2) sexuality as they intersect with issues of state and nation. In order to give feminist meaning to gender history, it is necessary to be critical of traditional historical narratives about national, economic, political and cultural developments. |

We will study the emergence and transformation of gay male, lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual identities, cultural practices, and political movements within the broader context of changes in the social constructions of sexuality, as well as cultural, social, political, and economic transformations. The interdisciplinary course explores the theory and methodology of oral history and women's narratives, introduces feminist methods, analyses ongoing researches in a global context with a special emphasis on Asia and results from a feminist point of view. Oral history is a way of constructing histories so the course tries to offer an overview of different ways how to construct information and how to analyse it in a wider methodological context. |

It is important to be aware that writing 'women's history' is never only the collection of facts and figures about women in the past. Approach to study of equality in its relation to the category "women" and to the production of gender. Considers a variety of materials including theories of social justice, and writings by and on behalf of women living under different forms of social practice. Examines how public/private distinction structures rights, offers protections, produces hierarchies, and sexualizes power relations. Such notions as oppression, liberation, sexuality, equality, and autonomy are explored, along with questions concerning the relationship between biological and social facts and moral values. |
